Nehemiah’s Story
Nehemiah served as cupbearer to king Artaxerxes of Persia miles away from his homeland of Judea. Nehemiah was moved to tears when he heard how far the capital Jerusalem had crumbled from her former glory. He was far removed from the troubles his countrymen were experiencing in Judea, but he carried the burden for them and his God. The Lord placed Nehemiah in a position of leadership, with great gifts and abilities that prepared Nehemiah to accomplish an amazing feat. Nehemiah rallied his people and reconstructed the wall of Jerusalem in fifty-two days with the blessing and authority of the Persian King.
Our Nehemiah Story
We can learn from Godly leaders in the Bible like Nehemiah. God has placed each of us in positions with abilities and resources to do amazing things for God and his kingdom. Just as Nehemiah rallied the people around a goal, we too are going to gather together around the goal to extend God’s reach to those in need through Hospitality House, St. Paul Pontiac and India. These are St. Matthew’s “branching out” missions for the year 2012.
Over ten weeks we will read through portions of Nehemiah and apply the lessons to our lives and put our faith in action. In “The Nehemiah Project” families and members will receive an amount of money to reinvest in personal projects. Everyone will be encouraged to use their own talents, hobbies, skills, connections and ingenuity to increase the amount that they have received. Just as groups and families worked together to complete portions of the wall in the book of Nehemiah, individuals, small groups and families are encouraged to rally around projects to support Hospitality House, St. Paul or India. An informational booklet will be handed out that will offer ideas and more information on how the funds will be used. Near the end of The Nehemiah Project everyone will return the funds and all of St. Matthew will celebrate the ways God has blessed our efforts and the mission of His church.
