The Messenger for the week of February 19

This Week At St. Matthew

  • February 25th – OUTFLOW into our Community – simple ways everyone can share Christ’s Love!  Our Outflow series will be coming to a close at our Sunday Worship Gatherings, but our outflow into the community and the lives of others will be continuing.  We have four scheduled events that will take place across both our Walled Lake and Wixom communities on Saturday, February 25th.  The events in Walled Lake will take place in the morning with Pizza and snacks together at the Walled Lake campus afterward.  The Wixom events will take place in the afternoon with Pizza and snacks at the Wixom campus afterward.  Feel free to attend the time and activity that best fits your day!  Please see the eNews or the bulletin board near the church offices for details on the four locations, times, and activities!

  • Ash Wednesday is this week.  You are invited to join a special worship gathering with communion and the optional imposition of ashes at 7pm at either the Walled Lake or Wixom campus.  You may also come early and enjoy Mostaccoli and salad at our Walled Lake campus or soup and sandwiches at the Wixom campus, both starting at 6 pm.

  • Due to the upcoming retirement of our 4th Grade Teacher, Mrs. Betty Stevenson, we are seeking names to fill this vacancy for the 2012/2013 school year.  If you have the name of a qualified teacher candidate that you would like to submit, please contact the school office at 248-624-7677 or speak to our principal, Sue Palka by March 1st.

  • Did you know that member John Booth’s grandson David plays in the National Hockey League for Vancouver?  They play the Detroit Red Wings on Thursday, February 23.  Who do you think Grandpa John will be cheering for?

  • Church Doctor Report: Dr. Kent Hunter of Church Doctor Ministries provided 260+ recommendations as part of his Diagnostic Church Consultation at St. Matthew.  The recommendations have been assigned to pertinent staff and ministry groups for their discernment and, if approved, implementation.  If you have any comments or suggestions regarding the church consultant’s recommendations, you are invited to submit them to the church office.  Please pray for God’s direction in this so that we might help even more people to "grow closer to and more like Jesus."

  • Because you asked:  A “thank you gift” is being provided to Pastor Frank Graves for his years of assistance with homebound visitation and help during the last pastoral vacancy.  If you would like to write a “thank you” note to Pastor Frank, his new address is: 2290 Christine Court SE Grand Rapids MI 49546.

  • Second Saturday in March donations needed:  We will be supporting St. Paul Lutheran with several projects on March 10, both at St. Matthew and at St. Paul.  Donations needed for the projects include after school snacks for children, layette items such as diapers, baby clothes, blankets, wipes; supplies for St. Paul's kitchen such as napkins, paper plates, hand sanitizer & cups; items for hygiene Kits -  tooth brushes, tooth paste, soap, Ziploc bag to assemble kits, and donations of fleece to make blankets.  Please bring items to the church offices or to the event on March 10.  See the eNews for more details or the church bulletin boards.

Announcements

  • Homebound Visitation Deacon:  Pastor Frank Graves recently announced that as of February 1st he will no longer be able to serve as St. Matthew's Homebound Visitation Pastor.  This is due to the fact that Pastor Frank and his wife Beverly have moved to Grand Rapids.  As a result, St. Matthew's Administrative Board and Elders, as well as the Michigan District, recently approved the decision to hire Deacon Ron Whitaker as St. Matthew's Homebound Visitation Deacon.  Consequently, Deacon Whitaker will be serving as Pastor Frank's replacement.  Deacon Whitaker is both a synodically-trained deacon of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod, as well as a long-time member of St. Matthew, and brings a great deal of life and ministry experience to this position.  Although we're sad to see Pastor Frank go, it's with great joy that we welcome Deacon Whitaker into his new ministry role at St. Matthew!
  • Sanctuary altar flowers are offered today in loving memory of Carol Scharrer from Ed Scharrer and her family.
  • Welcome to the newest member of God's family, received through baptism today, Samuel Christopher Brendel.
