The Messenger for the week of May 20

This Week At St. Matthew

You Can't Do That!
Have you ever heard that before?  Mocking and ridicule fills a person with self-doubt.  Your rivals would love to see you hang up the towel and give up out of frustration.   Nehemiah heard the taunting from his rivals, but he chose to ignore the choir of critics.   He trusted that God would deal with his adversaries and he continued with the construction.  Ridicule is no fun, whether it is an audible voice or our own insecurity.   We can learn from Nehemiah to trust in God and be persistent when we face confrontations of all kinds.

Many of you have already begun planning your projects; how exciting!  Please contact the church office so we can assist you in publicizing your event or project.  Events are also accessible at project.st-matthew.org or on the Outreach bulletin board.

  • We praise God that the following will be Confirmed and receive “first communion” at a special service on Sunday, May 20 at 1 pm at the Walled Lake campus: Kelly Abraham, Gabrielle Adkins, Calista Brunett, John Faubert, Rachael Girard, Kaitlyn Gulick, Thomas Gulick, Erin Jewett, Maxwell Klos, Rilee Manning, Hana Ohlrich, Amber Pauly, Alyssa Smukala, Alyssa Stults, Alec Thurber, Grace Veenstra, Ariel Wesenberg, and Violet Wesenberg.

  • Sunday, we will also celebrate and praise God for adding 29 adults and their families to the people of God at St. Matthew.  They include: Stephen & Alyssa Bornheimer, Sarah Cooper, Jon Curlee, Bradley & Alison Czischke (Addison & Austin), Jeffrey & Rebecca Enderlen, Michael & Nancy Fant, Bruce & Michelle Fishback (Patrick) Justin & Tyler Fishback, Leo & Teresa Garcia, Mark & Julee Henry (Lydia & William), Jeanne Hess, Bryan & Jennifer Hewitt (Gavin, Emma, & Haley), Craig & Holly Lahue (Samuel & Hannah), Michael Latzke, Michael Marijanovich, Anne Scheiwe, Amy Seaver (Brayden & Jayce), David & Vickie Williston, Lisa Wolstone (Tyler), and Natalie Zaguroli.

  • Praise God that He has led Samantha Schroeder accept the Divine Call to serve as our 3rd Grade Teacher starting next year!

  • Creative builders and artsy thinkers are needed to make our float for the Memorial Day parade!  If you would like to help with the construction of the float or if you would like to walk in the parade representing St. Matthew, please contact lisa.rohman@st-matthew.org .

  • On June 3, 2012, we will recognize and celebrate the years of faithful service that Mrs. Betty Stevenson has given to the educational ministry.  As she plans to retire at the conclusion of this school year, please plan to join us at 12:30 pm in Room 304 where we will hold a celebratory dinner in her honor.  Ticket prices are $7.00 for adults and $5.00 for children (age 3-13), and can be purchased at the school office. Please contact the school office or make your reservations using the St. Matthew website.  Reservations and payments need to be received no later than Wednesday, May 30, 2012.

  • St. Matthew Lutheran Church is pleased to announce that Trevor Sutton, a son of our congregation, will be Ordained into the Holy Ministry.  He has been assigned a Call to St. Luke Lutheran Church in Haslett, Michigan.  You are cordially invited to his Ordination Service at 11:00 am on SATURDAY, June 2, at our Walled Lake campus.  You are also invited to a light luncheon, which will follow the service.  If you would like to attend the luncheon, please RSVP to our church office by Tuesday, May 29.

  • Balloting for elections and budget is still open through Saturday, May 19.  Results will be available in the Sunday edition of the Messenger.

  • As the Lord may move you, you are invited to contribute to the air conditioning fund for the main worship center of the Walled Lake campus.  (There is about $14,967 in the fund toward a goal of $43,800.) Simply indicate that designation on your check or the envelope (which is located in the Friendship Form or hymnal rack); and place it in the offering.  As an incentive, an anonymous member has offered to match one person up to $1,000 in support of the air conditioning fund.

  • Sanctuary altar flowers are offered today with praise and glory to God by Joe and LeeAnne Angeloff in celebration of Sarah Angeloff and Jason Urbahns’ wedding.
