Four for 40: A church-wide plan to grow closer to and more like Jesus

Have you ever taken a drink from a fire hose?  I haven't, and I don't think I'll try.  Sometimes, I think people are afraid to read the Bible because they feel that it will be like "drinking from a fire hose."  It's easy to feel that there is so much content that it will be impossible to digest.

I hope over the next 40 days of Lent you can begin to put those fears to rest, and begin to drink deep into God’s Word.

Together as a congregation we are going to do “Four for 40.” That means we are going to read and/or listen to the four Gospels of the New Testament over 40 days.

This may be the first time you have approached the Bible or the gazzilionth time, but the good news for all of us is that God comes to us as we hear it and begins to quench that thirst. We all have a need for water to live in this world, but only Jesus can meet our eternal thirst.

Jesus said to the woman at the well. “Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, streams of living water will flow from within him.” John 7:38

So we’re going to try something at St. Matthew. The pastors are going to blog during the 40 days of Lent and share insights and thoughts as we go “Four for 40.”

To be honest (and this may come as a surprise to you or not) blogging really freaks me out.   I have tried to blog, but have not felt that I can engage people through my random and incidental thoughts or insights. You can be the judge of that, but blogging also takes on another value for me.   In December 2009 through the Vibrant Life series, we challenged everyone at St. Matthew to take one step in your faith that will bring you “closer to and more like Jesus.” We gave many ideas for how you could do this. Maybe doing “Four for 40” along with me is one of the ways you can grow closer.   Blogging is going to be one way that I am going to step out of my comfort zone to share Christ with you in a different way.

So… I hope the blogs coming from Paul, John and I will spur you in your growth in Jesus.   As you read or listen to the Gospels (using the mp3 CDs you received at St. Matthew) check out these blogs and write your insights too.

Each blog will include:
1.     A link to the reading at Biblegateway.
2.     An insight or application from the reading by one of the pastors.
3.     A link to an audio player from Faith Comes by Hearing that allows you to listen online (see below).
4.     Space for you to add a comment.

Happy listening or reading and drink deep!
