Transference is the psychological term for the phenomenon in which someone unconsciously redirects feelings from one person to another. For example, when you have a morning argument with a family member about access to the bathroom, you may unconsciously redirect your anger to someone at school or work when you arrive there. We're in a bad mood; and other get the brunt of it. This is because it is difficult for us to simply shut-off our emotions and feelings when going from one situation to the next.
Well, in today's Bible reading, Mark 11-12(ESV), I am struck by how Jesus isn't affected by transference. In Mark 11:15-19, there is an emotion-filled cleansing of the temple by Jesus. In Mark 11:27-32, the religious authorities challenge Jesus' authority. In Mark 12:1-12, Jesus shares a pointed parable, with the religious leaders present, that points out their shameful behavior. Jesus is tested by the religious leaders in Mark 12:13-17; and again in Mark 12:18-27.
Then, Jesus has another religious leader approach him, with a genuine and sincere request. If it would have been me, I would have likely snapped at him, viewing and treating him as just another hypocritical and venomous leader. But there is no transference in Jesus' approach. In fact, as Mark 12:34 states, "When Jesus saw that he answered wisely, he said to him, 'You are not far from the kingdom of God.'"
O God, please help me (and others) to not unfairly transfer our emotions, perceptions and reactions to others.
