The Messenger

Greetings to our Guests!

  • Greetings to our guests!  It is a privilege to have you join the people of St. Matthew in our time with God this weekend.  If you have questions about this or anything else, please stop by our Welcome Center.  Feel free to check out anything that might interest you in this Messenger or on our website:  www.st-matthew.org
  • If you have questions about religion, you are invited to explore life in Jesus with us at St. Matthew!  Come check out the Christian world view, ask questions, and learn what Christians believe in the “Exploring Christianity” class, which will be offered on Sunday, September 30, from 4-7pm at the Walled Lake campus in room 305, with supper provided.  Child care is available upon request.  To register or for more information on this class, visit our web site or contact the church office at 248-624-7676.
  • For those who want to grow in their relationship with Jesus and become a member of St. Matthew, our four session Membership Class experience will be offered starting on Sunday, September 30, from 4-7pm at the Walled Lake campus in room 304, with supper provided.  To register or for more information on this class, visit our web site or contact the church office at 248-624-7676.

From the Pastors

  • This weekend’s message will explore the prophetic confrontation of David over his affair with Bathsheba and its application to our lives and world today.  While the message will not be graphic in nature, it will deal with a subject matter that some parents might not want their children to yet hear.  So an alternative spiritual growth time will be offered for children during the Sunday sermon at both campuses.
  • We praise God to announce that Rebecca Sorter has agreed to serve as Interim Bible Adventure Director.  May God bless her ministry with and for children!
  • St. Matthew has modified the search for Church Secretary. The position has been updated to 35 hours per week and now includes health insurance. Turn Your Child’s Challenges into Opportunities for Growth and Help Your Child Thrive!

Children are under tremendous pressure today resulting in all kinds of personal challenges that affect their hearts and their responses to life. Anxiety, disrespect, defiance, depression, ADHD, and even things like anger episodes or arguing with Mom when she says no are indications of significant challenges.

"I Forgive You" is perhaps the most difficult phrase in the English language to say. And, it is often even more difficult to actually forgive another person (or yourself) than it is to say. The first and most important forgiveness is extended from God to us. Have you accepted God’s forgiveness? Have you accepted Jesus’ work on the cross? "Happy are the merciful" (Matthew 5:6). "Happy are the peacemakers" (Matthew 5:9). Come hear the FORGIVENESS lesson led by Justin this week at Celebrate Recovery.

A special thank you to Rebecca Sorter who will be serving as our Interim Bible Adventure Director for the coming school year. Bible Adventure begins on Sept 9 and we are in need of parents and other adults willing to help serve at both campuses. To volunteer to help please contact Rebecca.sorter@st-matthew.org.

We are again collecting school supplies to make kits for Lutheran World Relief. These School Kits are sent all over the world. To the children who receive School Kits, these supplies mean the difference between getting an education or not. Public school is usually free, but in the places where LWR works, even a few required supplies, like pens and paper, may be more than many families can afford. As you are buying school supplies for your children, please consider purchasing a few extra items. You may donate items individually or put together a complete bag. Last year we completed 130 kits. It would be exciting to exceed that amount this year.

Each School Kit consists of:

  • 4 spiral notebooks
  • 1 ruler
  • 1 pencil sharpener
  • 1 pair of safety scissors
  • 5 unsharpened pencils secured with rubber band
  • 5 blue/black pens secured with rubber band
  • 1 box of 24 crayons
  • 1 large eraser

In the past, spiral notebooks and scissors were the items we ran out of first. You can bring your donations to your child's classroom (or any classroom) anytime until the end of September. If you would rather donate money, we will be including a check to help with the cost of shipping these bags. Each bag costs $1.40 to ship. If anyone would like to make their own bag, a pattern is available online HERE or from Miss Scheiwe. If you have any questions, please contact Miss Scheiwe (wendy.scheiwe@st-matthew.org). Please bring your donations in by September 30, 2018.

St. Paul Pontiac is in need of the following items for their food / personal care pantry. Items can be dropped off in the Walled Lake Campus lobby area. Thank you for helping fill this urgent need!

This group has a high level of artistry and professionalism, performs a wide range of classical and sacred music, has travel opportunities, and performs concerts in fall, Christmas, and spring.  Rehearsals at First United Methodist Church in Birmingham Mondays 7:15 p.m. – 9:15 p.m. If interested in singing in the fall, please contact Norma Sander to schedule an audition at the first rehearsal on Monday, September 10.

Admission is a full size hygiene item for one of our charities.  Sponsored by Thrivent Community, Livonia. RSVP: https://markschultzthriventcommunity48152.eventbrite.com or 734-432-7777.  Click FileHERE for more info.
