Modern Day Slavery / Human Trafficking Event with Author Theresa Flores

  • Ever wondered about Human Trafficking?  How big a problem is it?  Where does it happen?  Does it really happen in Michigan?  How/where are the victims taken?  How do they get help? What can I do to help with this problem? Did you know that 8,759 cases of Human Trafficking were reported to the National Human Trafficking Hotline in 2017?
  • Michigan ranked #10 in the US for trafficking according to FBI
  • Sex Trafficking was the most common form of human trafficking reported to the NHTH in 2017.
  • Women and Girls made up approximately 80% of the survivors identified in 2017.
  • The life expectancy of a trafficked girl is 5 to 7 years.
  • Metro Detroit area ranks in the top of Michigan cities with the most calls received by the National Human Trafficking Resource Center and reported by The Polaris Project
  • The United Nations estimates the total market value of illicit human trafficking at 32 billion US dollars.  
  • The average age is 12 years of age.
  • It's the second largest crime in the world
  • Victims are taken from malls where the traffickers stalk and seduce them or other places where they can develop a trusting relationship with the victim

Join us on October 6, 2019 from  6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at the Walled Lake campus to hear Theresa Flores, author of "Slave Across the Street", advocate and survivor, talk about her experiences.  Lt. Wendy Reyes, Oakland County Sheriff Dept., discuss how this impacts our community, and Deb Ellinger, Elli's House, talk about how Elli's House provides safe shelter, educational support, counseling and medical services for homeless and runaway women involved in human trafficking.  This event is sponsored by the Christian Citizenship Committee.  There is no cost to attend this event, however, a free will offering would be appreciated to help us bring in more speakers.
