The Prize Inside - March 23

I took a trip to Norway when I was younger. I experienced fascinating culture, geography, and foods, but what impacted me the most was… Kindereggs (Children’s eggs if you don’t speak German). It was a hollow chocolate egg wrapped with foil. The foil was garbage. It was just there to slow me down. The chocolate was “okay”—a layer of white and milk chocolate. But on the inside there was a plastic pellet that had… a toy. You never knew what you were going to get. Opening a Kinderegg was like having Christmas every day. Did I mention I was in high school at the time?

John’s Gospel brings us to a new place in the Bible. Just like I knew there was going to be different layers of resistance before I got to the toy inside the kinderegg—John’s Gospel is written in a way that all the layers are pulled away to reveal a golden nugget—that Gospel.  John unlike the other Gospels creates in me a sense of mystery and excitement. John peels way the wrappings of God’s word to reveal new narratives and different perspectives.

  • The Word was at the beginning.
  • The Word is God.
  • All things were made through the Word.
  • The Word is the Light.
  • Darkness has not overcome the Light.
  • The Word became Flesh.
All these layers are pulled away to reveal the Christ Jesus, who came into the world to give joy, live and peace. It’s like being a kid again.
