On the Job Training - February 21

So often I think the image of the disciples falls into one of two extremes.   On one end we’ve got the 12 as bumbling, argumentative, unskilled workers that wouldn’t have made it into a boat let alone part of the elect if Jesus hadn’t chosen them himself. Then the other extreme is the 12 (minus Judas) transformed into spirit filled apostles ready to reach the world for Jesus.

But what about the in between?

Our text today (specifically 10:5-15) gives an inside peek at how Jesus trains the 12. The disciples did not have seminary degrees or certificates of training. They didn’t have money, transportation, or luggage. They didn’t even know where they were walking. They would stop at a home and if they found a person of peace they stayed and shared Jesus message with them—if not they moved on.

Jesus gave them the command to do some “on the job training” out in Israel (and later the world) saying as you go out give the message, heal the sick, cast out demons and raise the dead!

And they were wise enough to do it!

What do you think? Has Jesus equipped us to do the same?
