As I reflect on Jesus in these chapters of Matthew, I marvel at how He thinks and responds to the wave after wave of hostile religious leaders. I am amazed at how quick thinking He is; how is able to take an extended analogy (parable) and make it hit his opponents right between the eyes...as a hard call to wake up and repent.
As a reforming middle-born, natural people-pleaser who doesn't think well "on my feet" in intense situations, I am enthralled by Jesus' ability to be so focused on the Father and His will, so clever in leading opponents into their own verbal traps, and so easily able to discern and unmask hypocrisy. Jesus stands in the lion's den as the lion tamer.
O Spirit, please give us the mind of Christ (1 Corinthians 2:16) that we might think and speak well whenever we find ourselves in the lion's den. Amen.
