In answer to the question, "If I could ask God anything, what would it be?", a young person in our Christian school wrote, "I would ask God if he could get my family out of paying the government money so we won't have to move and pay the government."
I imagine that, especially these days, many people would like God to get them out of paying taxes. However, God says that part of our honoring the governing authorities that He set in place, we should: "Give everyone what you owe him: If you owe taxes, pay taxes; if revenue, then revenue; if respect, then respect; if honor, then honor" (Rom.13:7).
Now we might all wish that Jesus would help us pay taxes, like he instructed Peter in Matthew 17:24-27. But it seems to me that the Biblical priorities when we get a paycheck involve: First, in response to God's gracious provision of all that we need, give 10% or more to local congregation; second, pay required taxes; third, provide for your needs.
But it seems to me that the issue for this young person is more about God providing so that they don't have to move. In response to that, two Bible verses come to mind.
1) "Seek first God's kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things [basic needs of life] will be given to you as well" (Matthew 7:33). In other words, prioritize and trust Jesus first and foremost, with the assurance that He knows how best take take care of your basic needs.
2) "Trust God and do good" (Ps.37:3). If you have to move, trust God that He will lead you through it.
