Why the Big Fuss?!? - March 27

Have you ever noticed that in today's reading from John 8 (ESV) that the Jews are content to simply disagree with Jesus and tell Him how crazy and demon-possessed He is until vs. 58, where Jesus says, "Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I am"?  It's after Jesus says this that things suddenly get ugly, and the Jews decide that they're going to wipe Jesus off the face of the earth with a shower of stones!

Triple Dog Dare - March 26

One of my all-time favorite movies is A Christmas Story. One of the most impressionable scenes on the movie is the “Triple Dog Dare” at the outdoor pole. Remember that one? I can’t help but laugh as I write.

March 25 Overcoming Familiarity

The saying goes, "Familiarity breeds contempt."  It is another way of saying that we take for grantide that which we have all the time.  That is also true in matters of faith.

The longer a person is a Christian, the easier it is to take for grantide who Jesus truly is.  That is especially why I am intent on growing closer to Jesus, as we listen and read through the Four Gospels or accounts of Jesus in the Bible.  The challenge of this is to listen/read well-known Bible passages with new ears/eyes.

He Must Become Greater - March 24

Who do people see when you they look at you?  Do they see Jesus shining through you?  Or do they just see one more face in the crowd who's arrogant, cynical, sarcastic, jaded, impatient, always in a hurry, etc., like most of the people they meet each day?

The Prize Inside - March 23

I took a trip to Norway when I was younger. I experienced fascinating culture, geography, and foods, but what impacted me the most was… Kindereggs (Children’s eggs if you don’t speak German).

March 22 A Standard Operating Procedure

A Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) is a set of instructions concerning what to do in a given situation which lend themselves to a a given result.  SOP is used in the fields of health care, education, military, industry, etc.

"If You SAY So, God" - March 21

What can God do?

Hopefully this sounds like a kind of stupid question for me to be asking.  I say "hopefully", because I hope that you're someone who easily answers this question by saying "God can do anything - He's God!"  And yet so often, in our human arrogance, we do try to limit God by saying that He can only do something if we can understand how it's possible!  We try to put God "in a box", and the walls of that box are made-up of human reason and logic.

Worthless Currency - March 20

I have this weird thing about Canadian coins. Every once and a while I notice I get one in my pocket. Someone somewhere along the line had the gall to slip me some “worthless” currency (no offense Canucks).   I can’t in good conscience pass it on to someone else even though the size is roughly the same. So I have this growing pile of Canadian money.

March 19 Do I Need MORE Faith?

Here at St. Matthew, we are in a season of intentionally striving to, with God's help, grow closer to and more like Jesus.  It is in that light that I too have been listening/reading through the Bible accounts of Jesus.

In that light, as I was reflecting on Luke 17-18 (ESV), I was captivated by the apostles' request in Luke 17:5, "Increase our faith."  That sounded like something I want and need to grow closer to and more like Jesus.

A Question of Character - March 18

Are you a man or woman "of character"?  By that I mean, do those people who are closest to you generally believe you to be someone who is trustworthy, loyal and honest?  The kind of person who can be counted on to do the right thing in matters big, as well as matters small?
