Every Day is Father's Day

I said Happy Father's day to a dad yesterday and he gave me the quick reminder that for a dad "every day is Father's Day."  The job is never done.  It is a great job and I am happy for it!

More than Coincidence

In my devotions this morning, I was struck by...well, coincidence.  I was reading the account of Jesus' birth in Luke 2. It notes that a civil census required Mary and Joseph to travel from Nazareth to Bethlehem, where Jesus was born.  It struck me that Luke doesn't record this as a fulfillment of prophecy.  But in Matthew's account of Jesus' birth, when the Magi inquire of the birthplace of the new king, Herod is told by the scribes that, according to prophecy, the Messiah was to be born in Bethlehem.

A Controlled Environment in Changing Weather

Today is an amazing day of weather.  One minute it is cold, windy and raining.  The next minute the sun is shining.  It has been doing that most of the day.  It is a good day to stay inside a controlled environment.

Unshaken

I must admit that I am thoroughly fascinated by earthquakes.  This is not because I like to see people suffer.  Rather, I am intrigued by the geology of it...and what the Bible says regarding these phenomenon.  I am interested in how earthquakes likely played a role in the world-wide flood at the time of Noah.

So, this morning my eyes perked up when I read in my devotions, "Those who trust in the Lord are like Mount Zion, which cannot be shaken but endures forever."

April 3 Understanding Easter

As we close out our reading/listening to the Bible accounts of Jesus with  John 20-21 (ESV), I am struck by the Apostle John's Easter morning spiritual self-assessment.  He wrote in John 20:8-9, "...the other disciple, who had reached the tomb first, also went in, and he saw and believed; for as yet they did not understand the Scripture, that he must rise from the dead."  Through these Bible accounts of Jesus, the disciples are portrayed as slow to believe, slow

What Are You Afraid Of? - April 2

When it came to his dedication to Jesus, Simon Peter was absolutely oozing with confidence!  He was sure that he had Jesus' back, no matter what came His way!  He was Jesus' right-hand man!

Jesus Prays for You - April 1

As a pastor I hear a lot of requests for prayer. I am more than happy to pray with people and for their needs. But I wonder what the disciples had to be thinking, as they were eavesdropping on Jesus' prayers to his heavenly Father. I wonder if they began to realize what Jesus was doing for them over those short few years.

March 31 A Friend of God?

Several years ago, when I mentioned in a sermon that Jesus is our friend, I had someone question me about that.  We talk about Jesus being our Savior and our Lord.  But we don't often talk about Him as being friend.  Thanks to the popular Phillips, Craig and Dean song "Friend of God," this concept is more familiar.

Resisting God's Will - March 30

As I read through today's reading from John 12-13 (ESV), one of the things that struck me the most was just how stubbornly the Pharisees and the religious leaders opposed Jesus, even though the text tells us that they could tell He was from God!
